Worku Lemma’s career is a testament to ambition, perseverance, and visionary leadership. With over two decades of experience in the banking sector, he has climbed the ranks from a bank clerk to the highest echelons of leadership, shaping Ethiopia’s financial landscape. Now, with a new role in national logistics and as a board of director of Hibret Bank S.C., his expertise continues to drive transformation at a macroeconomic level in Ethiopia.

A Career Built on Determination and Expertise

Worku began his career at the grassroots level as a bank clerk. His determination saw him navigate every critical role in the industry—junior officer, loan officer, senior credit analyst, loan supervisor, branch manager, district manager, vice president—before ultimately becoming the founding presidents of two commercial banks. He was instrumental in establishing two commercial banks from scratch as a founding president, a testament to his strategic foresight and deep industry knowledge.

His career also took him to international financial platforms, where he engaged with the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and other global economic forums. Certified in International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and capital markets, Worku’s expertise is recognised not just within Ethiopia but also on the international stage. His professional roles span consultancy, training, and academia, where he has served as a consultant, trainer, and college lecturer.

The Transition to National Logistics Leadership

Worku recently embraced a new challenge—leading Ethiopia’s National Logistics Transformation Office. This role, which focuses on modernising Ethiopia’s logistics sector, highlights his ability to pivot into new industries while leveraging his financial acumen.

His involvement in logistics is not just a career switch but a strategic move to enhance Ethiopia’s economic infrastructure. With the country striving to transform its port operations, transport systems, customs processes, and international trade financing, Worku’s expertise in banking and finance makes him a pivotal figure in bridging these sectors.
